B 第一篇 Most people today insist that there is an inadequate amount of time to meet all the demands of their jobs, their families, and the modern world. Even with all the time-saving devices of modern industrial society, many people still lead hectic lives. They make commitments to do things every evening after work and use their weekends to catch up on housework and sleep. Modern transportation gets them quickly form home to office to health club to restaurant. People can now pack more activities into a single day than their ancestors dreamed possible, yet they still seem to be always running out of time. With constant interruptions from telephone calls or visitors, they are unable to make time for everything that requires attention. Sometimes so many things are going on at once that they feel overwhelmed, desperately in need of some breathing space in which they can collect their thoughts. Spare time can be hard to find, and when the boss pops his head in the door to ask, “Do you have a minute?”, the temptation is to say, “No!”

C V. 閱讀測驗(第 27 題至第 30 題,共 8 分)
Musicals have become one of the most extravagant forms of entertainment around. Certainly one of the most popular in recent years is Cats, a musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Webber is the incredibly successful composer behind many famous musicals, and Cats stands as one of the most famous. Cats is based on a book of poems by T.S. Eliot. The poems are fun and playful, and less intellectual and serious than the majority of Eliot's works. Cats was first performed in London in 1981, and had its final performance in 2002, hence the longest running musical at the time. It had nearly nine thousand performances. It was also performed on Broadway, starting in 1982, and was the longest-running musical in Broadway history until this record was broken by another of Webber's musicals, The Phantom of the Opera. Cats is essentially a musical fantasy. The human actors dress in elaborate cat costumes, and its various characters are introduced through songs. The story line is quite minimal, and not much happens. The main focus of the play is the characters themselves, and through the songs they share their personalities and their stories. The song Memory was particularly popular, and is often played outside of the Cats musical.

C       Have you ever heard something from a friend of a friend? Or thought you knew somebody who knew somebody who knew the president? Stanley Milgram believed that such chains were the world's basic social communication system.
Milgram was a Harvard University social psychologist and father of the "small world phenomenon": the theory that everybody is connected to everybody else by short chains of social acquaintances.
In 1967, Milgram sent 300 letters to randomly selected addresses in Omaha, Nebraska and Wichita, Kansas. Each letter contained a small packet and instructions to get the packet to a person in the Boston area that was known as the target. The letter provided the target's name, location, and occupation.
The Nebraskans and Kansans could only send the packet to the target through a chain of personal contacts--people they knew on a first-name basis. Those people were also supposed to send it along using the same criteria--through people they knew such as friends of friends, relatives, or business connections, getting closer and closer to the target each time.
Sixty packets, through sixty different chains of people, eventually reached the target. Of those, Milgram found that the average number of people in the chain was about six, a discovery that was called the "six degrees of separation." Milgram theorized that we are only a short chain away from anyone else and that the implications of such a small world could be enormous in business and communications. Now researchers at Columbia University are testing Milgram's hypothesis for the entire world. Using e-mail, they are trying to determine whether everyone is indeed only six social acquaintances away from everyone else. They may find that, because of rapid communication, the world is even smaller than it used to be, or that we've grown farther apart and have fewer acquaintances to build chains with.
