41.V. Reading Comprehension

(A) Puns are a great way to add humor to your story telling. For some people,
Shakespeare is the perfect example of this. He loved to use puns and added many to his
plays for his audiences to try to work out. Of course, some of Shakespeare’s characters
use puns more than others, and this makes them appear clever. It also provides a different
way for both the characters and Shakespeare to describe the world around them.
Hamlet is often thought to be Shakespeare’s smartest character, and so Shakespeare
gave him the most puns. Hamlet uses puns not only to explain serious matters in a silly
way, but also sometimes just to annoy people. Here’s one example of a Hamlet pun. After
Hamlet kills Polonius and hides his body, the king asks him where Polonius is. Hamlet
replies by saying he’s at dinner—“not where he eats, but where he is eaten.” What he
means is that Polonius is the dinner and is being eaten by the worms.
In another scene, Hamlet is in a yard where there is a man digging a grave. He asks
the man whose grave he’s digging. The man, standing in the grave, says, “Mine, sir.”
Hamlet finds this funny and replies, “I think it is yours indeed, since you’re the one in it.”
This shows how Hamlet loves to use puns, even in a place that is supposed to be serious.

【題組】51.According to the passage, which character uses puns a lot?
(A) Polonius.
(B) Hamlet.
(C) The man who’s digging.
(D) The king.

42.【題組】52.What is NOT mentioned as a reason Shakespeare used puns in his plays?
(A) To talk about characters’ environments.
(B) To make characters sound smart.
(C) To make sure only some people could understand.
(D) To give something for people to think about.

43.【題組】53.According to the passage, which of the following sentences is correct?
(A) The king can’t find Polonius, so he asks Hamlet.
(B) Hamlet thinks that the king may have killed Polonius.
(C) Hamlet asks a man to hide someone’s body for him.
(D) Polonius’s job is to prepare dinner for the king.

44.
(B) Hello, and welcome to my page. I’m Tina, and I’m a foreigner in Taiwan. I love to
travel and share my experiences with everyone! This time, I went to one of the biggest religious festivals in the world: the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage. Millions of people participate
in it every year!
The journey starts in Dajia, Taichung and goes to Singang, Chiayi County and back
again. It covers about 350 kilometers and lasts nine days and eight nights. I didn’t do the
whole thing, though. I just started at the beginning at Dajia’s Zhenlan Temple and walked
to Yongan Temple in Changhua.
The purpose of the pilgrimage is to pay homage to the goddess Mazu. Pilgrims carry
a statue of her on a palanquin for the whole pilgrimage. It stops at about 100 temples.
Followers show their love of Mazu with the kneeling ritual. As the palanquin passes over
them, they kneel and bow. This means Mazu will bless them and bring them good luck.
Let’s talk about the food. Pilgrims must start eating only vegetarian food three days
before the pilgrimage begins. On the first half of the pilgrimage, only vegetarian food is
served. Along the way, local people offer free food, drinks, and places to shower. The
pilgrims can only start eating meat again on the return journey. I’m glad I got to see this
lively event in person!

【題組】54. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
(A) The distance of the entire pilgrimage.
(B) The name of the goddess this event celebrates.
(C) A special action that pilgrims do to get blessed.
(D) The exact number of people who participate.
