21.   Have you decided to welcome a new pet into your home? If you have, remember to get one from an animal shelter, not from a pet shop. Animal shelters have many different kinds of animals looking for new homes, from cats and dogs to birds and other small animals. There are many great reasons for adopting a pet from a shelter.
Every year, about 2 million dogs and cats are euthanized in the US, not because they are seriously sick, but because there are too many animals in shelters. Therefore, when you adopt a pet from a shelter, you are not only saving an animal's life but also making room for another animal which really needs it. What's more, if you buy a dog from a pet shop, it means you are possibly getting it from a puppy mill. In a puppy mil, dogs are kept in cages all day, poorly fed and forced to have puppies. Once they are too weak or too sick to have any more puppies, they are usually thrown away like trash. What is worse, they might be killed when their prices fall. There will be no more puppy mills if we adopt animals instead of buying them from pet shops.
Now, are you prepared to welcome a new family member? Adopt one as your best friend, and you'll make not only your life but a homeless animal's life better. What could be better than that?

25.  The English alphabet was created over a thousand years ago, and it has changed a lot over the centuries. It grew out of the Roman alphabet, and the Roman alphabet came from the Greek. The Greek origins of English can be seen from the word "alphabet." This word is made up of the first two letters of the Greek alphabet: "alpha" and "beta." Many other examples demonstrate the ancient and mixed origins of the English alphabet.
One of them is the letter w. You may have noticed that its name - double-u - has more than one syllabe. This fact tells us the letter's origin. The letter w was first written as uu. In the eleventh century, these two letters came to be united and given sharper angles at the bottom to form the modern w.
Another letter with an interesting history is x. This letter was first used by ancient people of Western Asia. Later, it was acquired by the Greeks and used as the first letter of the Greek word for "Christ." This is why many people now write "Xmas" for "Christmas."
Today, about a hundred languages use letters from English alphabet. That is why English alphabet is the most widely used in the world. With this popularity, it seems unlikely that the English alphabet will undergo any huge changes anytime soon.
