41.四、閱讀測驗
Dear Daniel,
If you'd like to improve your English, one thing you can do is to build up your vocabulary. In order to do this, you have to practice a lot. I’m afraid there is not a short cut for this. But there are many effective ways. First of all, you should read a lot. You can read short stories, comics, newspapers, magazines etc. depending on your English level. As you read, you can try to guess the meanings of unknown words from the context of the sentence. If you cannot, then look up the definition in a dictionary. English to English dictionary should be your first choice and keep the translator as last. Another way of building vocabulary is to watch movies in English which will also help with pronunciation. Try to be involved with the language as much as you can. Keep a vocabulary notebook and write down a few words each day. Keep in mind that you have to revise them regularly. In my opinion, to communicate with people all you need is words. Even if you just say the words one after another, people most likely will understand what you mean regardless of the order of the words and grammar.

44.                                                       Summer Job
Hi, I am Evan. In summer, after schools are closed, I work at a theme park in a nearby coastal town. I love summer time and working at the park so I can't wait till the schools close for the summer. The amusement park where I work is really big with lots of fun rides and restaurants. But what's best about it is that it is actually built on the beach. This is a beach town and there is a really long boardwalk by the beach with many shops, food stores and stairs to the beach at several points. The main entrance to the park is also from the boardwalk. The park also has access to the beach so you can get to the beach by going through the park. I work there as a ride operator at one of the roller coasters which is the most fun. There are three other employees who work at the same ride with me. We welcome the riders, remind them the safety procedures and operate the ride. I work here for about two months every summer and enjoy it very much. They organize several fun events over the summer with free food, ice-cream and games for the workers. The park access is free for the employees so I can ride the rides as much as I want. My family and friends love visiting me here because I can get them free admission to the park too. The only bad part about working here is that it gets too hot sometimes. But even then, I can just jump in the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean and refresh.

47.                                          Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15. Martin Luther King Jr. was an important spokesman for nonviolent protest in the civil rights movement. The campaign for a national holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968.
After years of public pressure, a bill was introduced in 1983 to create a federal holiday. A few Senators opposed the bill and questioned whether King was important enough to receive such an honor. They submitted a 300-page report to the Senate criticizing King's opposition to the Vietnam War and wrote that King had worked with Communists. New York Senator Moynihan declared the document a "packet of filth", threw it on the Senate floor and stomped on it.
President Reagan passed the holiday into law in late 1983, and people began observing it in 1986. At first, some states resisted the holiday. By 2000, it was officially observed in all 50 states. In 1994, the holiday was changed by Congress into Martin Luther King Day of Service, a national day of community service. In honor of MLK, volunteers across the country are asked to donate their time to make a difference on this day.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Americans across the country are asked to answer that question by coming together on Martin Luther King Day to serve their neighbors and communities.

51.       Flattery is the act of giving more compliments than are needed. It is generally used for the purpose of gaining favor or pleasing somebody. However, flattery is not necessarily acceptable. If it is used properly, it is bound to please the one who receives it.If not, the recipient will feel it is awkward or even exaggerated.
Historically, flattery has been used when a king or queen is talked to.During the Renaissance, it was a common practice to see writers flattering the king. For example, Niccolò Machiavelli wrote in the book, The Prince, some lines which appeared to flatter Lorenzo II di Piero dé Medici, ruler of Florence. William Shakespeare did the same thing to King James I in Macbeth.
Flattery is also used to start a romantic relationship. When a gentleman tries to win the favor of a lady, he may use as many words or phrases to compliment the lady to show how fascinating she is to him. In most cases, the lady will not think flattery is untrue or exaggerated.
In some cases, however, flattery is negative. Negative descriptions of flattery appeared as far back as in The Bible.
