 [I.]
TAITUNG, Taiwan– There is a group of people who tries to collect as many plants as possible before these plants are gone.
These people are searching Taiwan for as many plant samples(樣本) as they can find, from Taitung to Dongyin(Matsu).
“I started collecting plants when I was still at school. I didn’t think it was that important. But since I began working at the conservation centre(保育中心), I have understood that many plants that used to be there, are no longer there,” said Hung Hsinchieh, a researcher at the conservation centre.
“So for many things, if you don’t protect them, perhaps in the future you’ll no longer be able to find them.” 70% of the island is forest, which is home to deer, wild boar and Formosan black bears. Taiwan’s government has taken actions and a turn to renewable energy(再生能源), but the island still acts poorly when it comes to dealing with(處理) climate change(氣候變遷).
“Then we’ll have these plants that we can use. Or maybe one day, we can provide them.” The goal is to make sure Taiwan’s biodiversity(生物多樣性) is protected. And these plants can one day be re-introduced.
“We hope that these plants have a chance to go back to their home. Or one day, when we wish to create a (new) place, these plants are able to live there happily,” said Cheng.

Fewer flights could mean higher prices.      By Tom Burridge
Some airlines(航線) might die after COVID-19. And those that come through it will be smaller. There will be fewer flights because people and businesses have less money to spend and video meeting becomes the new mode.
A smaller aviation(航空) market means ticket prices could be higher. After weeks of staying at home, many of us may want to travel, but travel by plane, train or boat might have to change. For example, EasyJet says it plans to make people not be too close to each other - and tickets for a plane with fewer people will be more expensive.
The number of people on trains and subways may be lower, as some people will work at home. Riding bikes and electric scooters(such as a Gogoro) should become more popular - although some people might jump in the car.
Virtual lessons for the long term?              By Branwen Jeffreys
Now more than 90% of children around the world are out of classes. The disease(COVID-19) could go on for years. Teaching has moved online. The problem of digital poverty(數位貧窮) is keeping children out of learning. Even in the UK, many people still don't have a device(smartphone or tablet) of their own, which they can use for schoolwork.
About 59% of 12 to 15-year-olds have their own tablet(iPad), while 83% have a smartphone. Some kids in England will be able to borrow computers to help them study at home, thanks to help from the Department for Education(教育部).

(D)About 59% of junior high school students don’t have their tablets.

You can think about two dolphins swimming in the ocean. You hear many sounds coming from dolphins. It is just like a converstaion(對話). We can’t be sure what they are talking about, but scientists(科學家) do believe dolphins call each other by “name.”
A study says dolphins not only create their own special “sounds,” but they also copy sounds of other dolphins they are close to and want to see again. Dolphins can call their friends or families by copying their sounds.
“They’re names,” said Randall Wells, one of the scientists of the study. Scientists found that dolphins which know each other would copy the sounds of another dolphin in that group even when they were separated(分開) from each other. Most of this happened among mothers and babies, or among dolphins who were close friends.
If dolphins can talk to their friends with just a few sounds, it’s easy to think about what else they’re saying.

【題組】35. What is the main idea of the passage?
(A) Dolphins create sounds to talk to researchers.
(B) Dolphins show strong ties(聯繫) only to their family members.
(C) Dolphins show a special way of animal talking.

22.[IV.]
Although not quite a driverless car, the Tesla Model S has many special features, such as autopilot(自動駕駛), road change assist(切換車道輔助) and automated parking(自動停車). The most surprising of these, autopilot, works by using a forward radar(雷 達), 12 long-range ultrasonic sensors(感應器) put around the car, a forward-facing camera and a digitally-controlled electric braking(煞車) system.
The camera reads road signs(交通號誌) and checks for things in front of the Model S’, while the radar and ultrasonic(超音波) sensors sense five metres (16 feet) around the car to check for cars in traffic. The data will go back to the car’s engine control unit (ECU), which will tell what roads the Model S needs to take. The idea is to give more comfort for the driver. Autopilot has already been seen as a factor(因素) in many deaths. Walter Huang played a game on his smartphone when his Tesla Model X crashed into a highway barrier(護欄) in Mountain View, California, in March 2018. Huang was using Autopilot and did not brake or go away from the barrier. The National Transportation Safety Board asked Tesla to find a better way to sense if drivers are distracted.                 Earlier this month, Canadian government said that the driver of Tesla Model S was asleep, and that the car was driving itself when it drove to 150km when the police tried to stop the car.
Tesla has promised to fix Autopilot system, but the company has not said anything for more driver safety measures(措施).
