III. Reading Comprehension (40%) The Academy Awards is an American awards ceremony held annually to honor achievements in the film industry. Winners are awarded the statuette, the Oscar, which is officially named the Academy Award of Merit. As the oldest entertainment awards ceremony in the United States, the Oscars has many equivalents—the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theatre, and the Grammy Awards for music and recording, which are all modeled after the Academy Awards. In 1929, the first Academy Awards was presented at a private dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. A total of 270 people attended the ceremony and fifteen golden statuettes were awarded to distinguished artists, directors and other personalities of the film-making industry for their works. At the 29th ceremony, the Best Foreign Language Film category was first introduced. After that, foreign-language films were honored with the Special Achievement Award. As of the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony held in 2011, a total of 2,894 Oscars have been given for 1,853 awards.
