Nicholas Black Elk was a famous North American Indian of the Dakota Sioux tribe. He lived in the western part of the United States 400 years after Columbus discovered the New World and 200 years after the British began to settle New England. Black Elk was a medicine man who had many visions. When he became ill as a young boy, he dreamed that he joined his ancestors who taught him how to help his tribe keep their culture. This Great Vision was an important source of inspiration to the Indians who were forced by the white settler society to give up their land in the late 19th century. His tribe had also lost the free buffalo herds they depended upon for food. Black Elk’s visions still remind Indians today to work hard to continue to maintain the values and spirit of Native American culture.
