The infection does not spread readily through indirect contact, probably because of the relatively short life of the virus outside the birds (see Thermal Inactivation). However, contact exposure at hatch was shown to be an effective method of spread of ALV-J among broiler breeder chickens (194, 564, 565) and was prevented by small group rearing (568).
