Conjunctions and Transitions are used to connect ideas, paragraphs and sentences.

And, but, yet, so, nor, and or are known as conjunctions, or coordinating conjunctions. Like transitions, they link two or more independent clauses. The punctuation before a conjunction is always a comma, except with very simple, brief ideas, in which case a comma is unnecessary.

欲突破聽力的瓶頸，首先必須了解，所有的英文單字可以分成兩大類，即

實詞（Content Words）

虛詞（Function Words）

實詞本身有著重要的意義，例如﹕mother（母親）、forget（忘記）、today（今天），等，而虛詞通常在整個句子中意義並不重要，甚至根本沒有意義可言，而只是扮演著文法的角色，以使整句合文法，例如﹕the, of, will等。

而在句子中，我們可以發現實詞通常需要重讀（Stressed），而虛詞則輕讀（Unstressed）。

      3.形容詞（Adjectives）如﹕beautiful（美麗的）,kind（仁慈）。
      4.副詞（Adverbs）如﹕brightly（明亮地）,quickly（快速地）。
      5.指示形容詞（Demonstratives）
      如﹕this, that, these, those。
       6.疑問詞（Interrogatives）如﹕who, when, why等。
      虛詞通常輕讀（Unstressed），包括﹕
      1.冠詞（Articles）﹕a, an, the等。
      2.介詞（Prepositions）﹕to, of, at, on等。
      3.人稱代名詞（Personal Pronouns）﹕ I, me, he, him等。
      4.所有格（Possessive Adjectives）﹕my, this, yours等。
      5.關係代名詞（Relative Pronouns）﹕who, that ,which 等。
      6.連結詞（Conjunctions）﹕ and, but, that, as, if等。
      7.one為避免重覆而代替名詞來用時，如the red dress and the blue one，其中one即代替dress，此時one需輕讀。
      8.be動詞和助動詞﹕如am, is, are, be, have, do, will, would, shall, should, can, could, may, must等。 

英文句子實詞與虛詞的功用

假使我們聽到Sun rises east，我們把三個字的意思「太陽」、「上升」、「東方」直接連在一起，我們知道全句的意思必定是「太陽從東方升起」，但不知如何表達時，只要把代表這些意思的字詞擺在一起，即Sun rises east，對方也一樣可以了解，我們所要表達的意思是由Sun, rises ,east這三個實詞所左右，這三個字已經決定全句的意思。 

但話說回來，Sun rises east.畢竟不是正確的英文。為了使全句成為正確的英文，我們仍必須依賴虛詞。當我們把虛詞也加入句中時，使實詞和虛詞一起發揮功能，而成為一句正確英文時，全句就成了The sun rises in the east. 在英文中sun必須加定冠詞the，而方向之前也要加the，再者，表示介詞的方向用in。如此，決定意思的實詞和使全句合乎文法的虛詞相結合，就成為了The sun rises in the east.這麼一句正確的英文了。
