下視丘接受壓力刺激後,刺激腦下腺前葉釋出ACTH，刺激腎上腺皮質分泌一系列的corticosteroids(皮質類固醇)，如：cortisol、aldosterone。交感神經系統的神經元刺激腎上腺髓質分泌NE、Epi。
