observations that patients with palatal weakness sometimes impound intraoral pressure by assisting velopharyngeal closure with the back of the tongue. Tongue protrusion during cheek puffing prevents this, so the cheeks cannot be puffed and air escapes nasally if the palate is significantly weak.
