Since the first reports of successful induction of farrowing using PGF a or a synthetic analogue a large number of reports have been published worldwide. It is now an accepted procedure in the pig industly. More recently, attempts have been made to improve its efficiency by combining prostaglandins with other hormones to even further reduce the interval between treatment and onset ofexpulsion ofpiglets. The basic procedure using prostaglandins is that either natural,PGF2a or a synthetic analogue, such as cloprostenol, is injected intramuscularly on days 111-113 of gestation, and farrowing will occur on average 28 hours later. Thus, if the timing of injection is between 08.00 and 10.00 hours, the majority of sows will farrow during normal working hours.
