Virus is acquired by close contact and infects the epithelia cell of the skin or mucous memb

Virus is acquired by respiratory route and spread by viremia to the kidney early in life.

Persists in the basal layer

Produces virus in terminally differentialted keratinocytes

Virus establishes persistent and latent infection in organs such as kidneys and lungs.

Hidden from immune responses and persists

Infections are asymptomatic

Tissue tropism and disease presentation dependent on virus type è warts

BK – latent infection of kidney,

JC – infection of kidney, lung and RES

In imunocompetent – replication is blocked

In immunocompromised pt:

JC èprogressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML)

Certain types are associated with dysplasia è DNA integrated in chromosome
