We probably think of an Englishman as sensible and calm, feeling the need to act out principle, devoted to political freedom, law-abiding, content with social inequality, and willing to work in harness with even his bitterest political enemy since all agree on the basic assumptions about the country. He is accustomed to a political stability that is unparalleled elsewhere, and takes it entirely for granted. ...
