倍數的比較
論文寫作中要比較或討論研究結果時，常會用「倍數」來表達其差異，句型有以下數種：
1. 倍數詞+比較級Adj. + than
此句型中的形容詞要用比較級，而倍數詞除了「半倍」是half、「兩倍」是twice之外，其他倍數都是由數字加上times所組成，例如「三倍」是three times，「四倍」是four times，以此類推。另外必須注意要同類的對象才能比較，例句如下：
Your dog’s sense of smellis up to 100,000 times greater thanyours.
你的狗的嗅覺比你要靈敏十萬倍。
à句末的yours指的是your sense of smell，如此才能與your dog’s sense of smell作比較。許多同學會只寫you，寫出像下面這個錯誤的句子：
* Your dog’s sense of smell is up to 100,000 times greater thanyou.
à此句變成把狗的嗅覺和人作比較，是不同事物的比較，這在中文寫作中雖可被接受，但在英文中卻是錯誤的寫法。
2. 倍數詞+ as +原級Adj. + as
此句型中的形容詞要用原級，而不是第一種句型中所用的比較級形容詞。
The distance isthree times as long asthe previous one.
此距離是前者的三倍長。
TheAkitaistwice as large asthe Shiba Inu.
秋田犬是柴犬的兩倍大。
This device ishalf as heavy asthat one.
這個儀器是那個的一半重。
3. 倍數詞+ the + N. + of + N.
這個句型可和上述的第二種句型代換，把第二種句型中的Adj.改成N.，再加上the和of，則可表相同的意義。
The distance isthree times the length ofthe previous one.
此距離是前者的三倍長。
à注意length和long的區別
= The distance isthree times as long asthe previous one.
TheAkitaistwice the size ofthe Shiba Inu.
秋田犬是柴犬的兩倍大。
à注意size和large的區別
= TheAkitaistwice as large asthe Shiba Inu.
This device ishalf the weight ofthat one.
這個儀器是那個的一半重。
à注意heavy和weight的區別
= This device ishalf as heavy asthat one.
4. V. + (by) +倍數詞
可直接在表變化成長的動詞例如increase（增加）、decrease（減少）、grow（成長）、rise（上升）、raise（提高）、reduce（降低）等字後加上介系詞by，再接倍數詞，以表示變化成長的幅度，例如：
Industrial accidentsdecreased by1.5timesthis year.
今年的工業意外減少1.5倍。
5. V.（表倍數的動詞）
表倍數變化，亦可直接使用表倍數的動詞，如double（兩倍）、triple（三倍）、quadruple（四倍）、quintuple（五倍）、sextuple（六倍）等，例如：
The number of students learning Chinesehas tripledin the last three years.
學習中文的學生人數增加到三年前的三倍。
欲表達事物的變化，除了倍數的比較之外，也可採用百分比的比較，例句如下：
InSouth Korea, 160,000 high school and university students are studying the Chinese language,an increase of 66%over the past five years.
在南韓，16萬名的高中和大學生正在學習中文，比過去五年增加了66%。
à此處的increase作名詞用，而非動詞，因此其前加不定冠詞an，其後加介系詞of，再加百分比的數字。
