They are worn in front of the face. They hide the characters behind them. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
What are they? Masks, of course!
People have been putting on masks for twenty thousand years. In many countries, masks are made
of wood and have magic powers. The user of the mask can get supernatural or spirit power from the
mask. For example, the witch doctors in Africa and Asia put on colorful and sometimes scary masks
to make evil spirits leave someone’s body.
In some cultures, masks are very important in dramas. In Chinese operas and Indonesian dance, many of the characters
wear masks. The masks can show whether the characters are good or bad. For example, people in masks look like gods and
come down from the sky to protect the weak people or keep away their bad luck during the dance in Bali.
Many people believe that when people put on masks, they become the characters of the masks themselves. So, even a
good person can become evil if they put on an evil mask. For example, Halloween is a celebration of ghosts and witches in
Western culture. Once the children put on masks, they become those characters. Watch out for the children in a Dracula
mask! Maybe they’ll drink your blood.
