For three days, the people in Burma engage in ritual water-throwing to celebrate the New Year. The water-throwing is not just fun. It also has a serious purpose, for it symbolizes the washing away of the sins and cares of the old year. As a result, no one takes offense at being soaked to the skin when buckets of water are hurled at them. And since the festival comes at the hottest time of the year, when temperatures soar to 38℃, few people mind having a cooling shower.
