請依下文回答第 46 題至第 50 題: Why would woman want to take a vacation without her family? Some mothers say they need time to be alone. “At home the only place where I can be by myself is the bathroom,” one woman said. At Mother’s Camp a woman has a room to herself. She can sleep, read, or watch TV, and no one will bother her. No children will ask, “Mom, what’s for dinner?” No husband will say, “Honey, I can’t find any clean socks.” Some women go to Mother’s Camp not to be alone, but to be with women who are in familiar situations. “I work full time and have two kids,” one woman says. “I take care of my husband, too. I’m incredibly busy. At Mother’s Camp I meet other women who are working and raising families. We talk and talk. It helps me to know that other women have the same problems I do.”Actually, many women have the same problems as she does. Almost 50 percent of women in the United States work outside the home. Many of them work full-time and then come home to a second job—taking care of their homes and families. These working women say one of their biggest problems is housework.

Are you interested in making a French omelet? Below are some steps you may follow: First, whisk together the eggs until just mixed, then season. Lay out any fillings by the hob. Second, heat a pan over a medium-high flame and add the butter and “swirl” to coat. When the foam begins to die down, pour in the eggs. They should sizzle. Third, shake the pan to distribute the eggs evenly, then leave for 20 seconds until they begin to bubble. Add any filling such as onion, corn, mushrooms, etc. Next, use a fork to draw in the sides of the eggs to the center while shaking the pan to redistribute the liquid to the edges. The omelet is done when still slightly runny in the middle. Finally, take off the heat, and fold two edges into the middle. Shake the pan so they roll together, then tilt it and turn your omelet on to a warm plate (you can tidy it up before serving if you like). Season with salt and pepper, and then eat immediately!
What’s your favorite omelet recipe, and are you a stirrer or a shaker? And can these delicate French omelets ever compete with a whopping British half moon, oozing with cheese, and served with chips?

第 46 題至第 50 題為題組 For many people, a typical vacation might involve lying out and getting some sun at the beach or shopping until they drop. But, if you’re looking to take a trip in which you can broaden your horizons and soothe your aching muscles, a fantastic opportunity can be found in south-western Turkey. There, two breathtaking sites await you. One is Pamukkale, an incomparable natural wonder. The other is Hierapolis, an ancient city, filled with Greek and Roman ruins from a bygone era. In Turkish, Pamukkale means “cotton castle,” which is a fitting description for this attraction. In a picture of Pamukkale people might mistake the pure white scenery for mounds of snow. Yet, they are actually rock formations; they appear pure white due to mineral deposits left by the calcium-laden spring waters and volcanic springs that have flowed over them for thousands of years. Since the 2ndcentury B.C., Pamukkale has been a famous spa, visited by people who want to experience its beautifying effects and find a remedy to whatever ails them. Built next to the “cotton castle” is Hierapolis, which means “Holy City” in Greek. Over its history it was struck by many powerful earthquakes. Today, many structures from the Roman era still remain. Tourists can walk down Colonnade Street, which used to be the main road when the town was bustling with people. It divides the city into two sections by large pillars on each side of the street. As they stroll along, visitors can see the ruins of many buildings, including shops, pantries, and ancient homes. Located in the middle of Hierapolis is the well-preserved Roman Theater. Back in its heyday, the theater had the capacity to hold 8,500 to 10,000 spectators. People would gather here for concerts, sporting events, and religious ceremonies. But most of all, they came here for theater. Today, many statues depicting famous mythological figures from the theater have been restored and are on display inside. In recent times, Hierapolis and Pamukkale became targets for savvy businesses. Many hotels were constructed over the ruins, and a road was built over Pamukkale for motorbikes, causing great damage to the sites. But, after the area was declared a world heritage site, the hotels were torn down and the road was closed. Now, people must walk on Pamukkale barefoot. With these safeguards in place, Pamukkale and Hierapolis should continue to heal and entertain tourists for years to come.

依下文回答第21題至第25題 The Greeks invented philosophy. The word itself comes from the Greek, meaning “love of wisdom” From the sixth century B.C.E. until the fourth century B.C.E., Greek thinkers throughout the Hellenic world started addressing a wide range of questions about the nature of the universe and the meaning of life. It is a mystery why the Greeks, beginning around the sixth century B.C.E., were the first to pursue sustained philosophical inquiry. But since they lacked palace bureaucracies or professional priests, no vested interests stood opposed to free speculation and observation. In addition, because literacy was widespread—owing to the simplified Greek alphabet—and because new military tactics and governmental institutions gradually strengthened their ideals of equality, the Greeks came to believe that they were different from others, especially their Persian neighbors, and began ever more to speculate on the reasons for the differences. Finally, their relative indifference to material needs and the availability of leisure time offered the Greeks unprecedented opportunities for reflection.

請依下文回答第 11 題至第 15 題: Do you often feel that “If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong”? If yes, then you are living under the influence of Murphy’s Law. Many people interpret this law as a pessimistic view of life. 11 the theory is a message of hope, a call to excellence. In 1949, the US Air Force was running a test to study the human tolerance for G-forces during rapid deceleration. Engineer Edward A. Murphy designed a special harness that had 16 sensors, each of which could be installed in two ways. At the end of one crucial experiment, it was found that the sensors provided a zero reading. Murphy’s assistant had installed all of them 12 , with each sensor wired backwards. In a voice like thunder, the 13 engineer complained, “If there are two or more ways to do something and one of those results in a catastrophe, then someone will do it that way!” This is the original form of Murphy’s Law. Later Murphy 14 the sensors so that they could be installed in only one way. As Murphy’s Law spread across the world, it was taken as a principle 15 pessimism. Murphy was unhappy with this misinterpretation. The optimistic law aims to crystallize a principle: one should always assume the worst scenario when designing objects and minimize human error.

三、英文作文(20 分):請根據下面的指示,寫出一篇大約 200 字的短文。
Read the excerpt below carefully and think about the assignment that follows.
Sometimes in soccer, an attempt to defend one’s turf results in a score for the opposing team—an “own goal.” There have already been nine such incidents of self-sabotage in the 2018 World Cup, by far the most in the history of the tournament. But you won’t find the most spectacular example of the summer on the pitch in Russia. That distinction goes to Donald Trump’s administration, whose determination to start a trade war with China is, like the best own goals in soccer, muscular in its approach, blind in its aim, and self-injurious in its consequences.
–Derek Thompson. Why Donald Trump’s Trade War Will Fail.
         The Atlantic, July 7, 2018.
Assignment: Based on the excerpt, what is an “own goal”? What are the implicit similarities between “the best own goals in soccer” and Donald Trump’s trade war with China? Do you agree with Derek Thompson’s opinion of the trade war? Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.
