The Old Man and the Sea is a novel by Ernest Hemingway. The book is about an old fisherman, Santiago, who fishes alone. Friendless except for a young boy named Manolin, Santiago has only one remaining purpose in life-to catch a big fish in order to prove to Manolin and to himself that he is still a good fisherman. After eighty-four days of unsuccessful fishing, on the eighty-fifth day Santiago goes far out into the sea, where he hooks a giant marlin. He struggles with the fish for two days and nights and finally kills it. Soon sharks appear and attack his fish. The old man fights them off with all his strength but fails to protect his catch. Only the bones of the great fish remain as proof of Santiago’s courage and strength when he returns with it to the harbor. (請依據上述文章,回答第 46~50 題)

Making a good speech in public is a big challenge for most people, but there are some basic rules you can follow. First of all, you need to know what kind of audience you have. Maybe they are a friendly audience who knows you already, or maybe they are strangers you need to get acquainted with. Next, the topic of your speech needs to be something you know a lot about. If you are a fashion designer, for example, you should not give medical advice. You had better talk about what styles are best for what kinds of body shapes. Also, in your speech you will want to give your audience strong images that will linger in their minds after the speech is over. Finally, don't make your speech too long. Nobody wants to go hungry or go to bed late because of a long speech.

A scorpion and a frog met at the side of a river. The scorpion wanted to cross the river, but he didn’t know how to swim.
“Please, Mr. Frog,” he said, “would you carry me across the river?”
“I can’t do that,” said the frog. “You are a scorpion, and you will sting me.”
“No,” said the scorpion. “I won’t sting you because then we will both drown in the river.”
This made sense to the frog, and he agreed to help him.
The scorpion climbed onto the back of the frog, and the frog began to swim. When they reached the middle of the river, the scorpion stung the frog. It hurt the frog very much, and they both began to sink under the water.
“Why did you sting me?” asked the frog. “Now I will die, and you will surely drown.”

Did you know that 7 out of 10 students have cheated at least one in the past year? Did you know that 50 percent of those students have cheated more than twice? These shocking statistics are from a survey of 9,000 U.S. high school students.

Incredibly, teachers may even be encouraging their students to cheat! Last year at a school in Detroit, teachers reportedly provided their students with answers to statewide standard tests. Students at the school told investigators that they were promised pizza and money if they cheated on the test as told. Similar charges at several schools in San Diego county have prompted investigation. A student at a local high school says she sees students cheating on almost every test, and the teachers don’t do anything about it.

The kids claim that they’re tempted to cheat because of peer pressure and intense competition to get top grades. Many kids also say that their parents are setting a bad example by “fudging” on income taxes, lying about age to pay lower admission prices, or cheating their way out of a speeding ticket. They are sending a message to their kids that it is okay to cheat and lie.

Finding solutions to this problem is difficult. In our school’s math classes, each student has different problems on their test papers, so it is useless to look at someone else’s answers. Teachers could also randomly mix the problems throughout the page. Another solution is for adults to lower their expectations. Chances are that students believe cheating is the only way to meet unreasonably high expectations. Perhaps it is time for parents and teachers to seriously examine whether higher test results are important enough to encourage cheating.

【題組】47 According to the article, what did teachers at a school in Detroit ask their students to do?
