Gaviotas, a rural area in Colombia, is an example of how even desolate places in the countryside can be developed for sustainable human use. This area had been considered a wasteland: dry brown savanna, without enough water, plant, or animal life to support a town. But today a green spot of a 25,000-acre forest and big aluminum sunflowers begin to dot the empty savanna. Under the trees are low white buildings and colorful houses, all with solar collectors. Begun in 1971 as a scientific experiment, Gaviotas is now a self-sufficient town of 200, supported by clean, renewable industries. In the beginning of restoring the unproductive savanna to a place where humans can live well, the first problem was finding pure water. The Gaviotans invented a special kind of hand pump to reach deepwater reservoirs. Another goal was to restore the soil and plants. After years, they discovered that Caribbean pines from Honduras could grow in the area’s thin, acidic soil. As more people moved to Gaviotas, it was important to consider a pollution-free way of transportation. Village mechanics developed a bicycle especially designed for the area’s rough land. Bicycles are now the official mode of transportation, cheap and pollution-free. Gaviotas is a remarkable accomplishment of sustainable development. This once dry landscape has been turned into a near paradise.
【題組】19 Why had this area been considered a wasteland?
(A)There were no plants at all.
(B)Not enough animal life was seen.
(C)There was not enough public transportation.
(D)There was only dry green savanna.

This summer when Mike went with his girlfriend, Vera, to a night market, he was happy to find a stand that sells jacket potatoes. Mike bought one with ham and pineapple for himself and asked if his girlfriend would also like to try one. Vera agreed and ordered one with fruit salad. As the one she ate tasted so good, Vera asked whether Mike knew how to make one. Mike said he used to see how his host family made it when he stayed in America. And it was not difficult to make. First, preheat the oven. Then, choose a good potato and wash its skin until it’s clean. After drying the washed potato with a towel, put it into the heated oven and wait for twenty to thirty minutes. When the potato is ready, cut it open and put any food you like on top of it to make it taste even better. After listening to what Mike told her, Vera understood why it is called a jacket potato -- it’s because one eats the potato with its skin on it.
【題組】49 According to the article, which of the following is NOT a necessary step in the making a jacket potato?
(A) Preheat the oven.
(B) Dry the washed potato with a towel.
(C) Cut the potato into small pieces.
(D) Put the food you like on top of the baked potato.

When provided with continuous nourishment, trees, like people, growcomplacent”—the word tree-ring scientists use to describe trees like those on the floor of the Colorado River Valley, whose roots tap into thick reservoirs of moist soil. Complacent trees aren’t much use for learning about climate history, because they pack on wide new rings of wood even in dry years. To find trees that feel the same climatic pulses as the river, trees whose rings widen and narrow from year to year with the river itself, scientists have to climb up the steep, rocky slopes above the valley and look for gnarled, ugly trees, the kind that loggers ignore. For some reason suchsensitivetrees seem to live longer than the complacent ones. “Maybe you can get too much of a good thing,” says Dave Meko, a tree-ring scientist who has been studying the climate history of the western United States for decades. Tree-ring fieldwork is hardly expensive, but during the relatively wet 1980s and early ’90s, Meko found it difficult to raise even the modest funds for his work. “You don’t generate interest to study drought unless you’re in a drought,” he says.
【題組】50 What kind of trees best reflect the history of climate?
(A)The trees surviving after a natural disaster.
(B)The sensitive trees in tune with the pulses of the river.
(C)The complacent trees provided with sustainable nourishment.
(D)The ugly trees with wide new rings of wood even in dry years.
