From 1986 on, some of the world's mostdaringrunnershavegathered in the desert of Moroccoeveryyear to takepart in one of the mostdifficultraces in the world. The Marathon of the Sands, as it is called, coversover 125 miles of desert and mountainwilderness. The runners, payingroughly $5000 for theirparticipation, are supposed to complete the course in fewerthansevendays, runningwith all theirpersonalbelongings and food in theirbackpack.
The Marathon of the Sands was founded in 1986, meant to give the runners an unforgettableadventure. For most of the runners, the challenge of the race is indeed the mainreason for coming. On the first day，for example, they run fifteenmilesacross a desert of sand, rocks, and thornybushes. Few runnersfinish the day withoutblistered and raw feet. Whentheyarrive at the campsite for the night, they are completelyexhausted. The second day，the runners are up at 6:00 am. Within a few hours，it is 100 degrees F, but the runnersmustcovereighteenmilesthat day. On the third day, the runnersmustclimbgiantsanddunes. Dust and sand mix with the runners' sweat and soontheirfaces are cakedwith mud. Afterfifteenmiles of theseconditions, the runnersfinallyreachtheirnextcamp.
The racecontinueslikethis for fourmoredays. The fourth and fifthdays are the worst. On the fourth day, the runnerspassthrough a levelstretch and a beautiful, tree-filledoasis, but then, on this and on the next day，theycrossmorethantwenty-one miles of rocks and sanddunes. The temperaturesoars to 125 degrees F, and manyrunnerscannotmake it. Helicoptersrushfallenrunners to medicalhelp. Runners who make it to the end of the fifth day know the worst is over.
On the sixth day, heat and rockspunish the racersterribly. The desertwindpicks up and, as the heat is thrustagainstthemwithgreatforce，theygrowmore and moreexhausted. The seventh day is the last, withonlytwelvemiles to be covered. The dusty, tired, blisteredrunners set out at daybreak. Near the finishline, childrenracealongwith the runners, for everybody has caught the excitement The ones who have run the wholemarathonknowtheyhaveaccomplishedwhatmostpeoplecould not evendream of. "During the hardmoments," says one contestant who has racedheretwice, "I'd think, 'Why am I here?' Then I'd realize I was there to find my limits."
