There are many ways in which the Internet has changed our everyday lives. With it, we can keep in touch with friends and relatives in distant (遙遠的) places, and find out the latest news as it happens. Perhaps most importantly, the Internet has quietly saved us a lot of time in a variety of ways.
First, imagine you are talking with friends one evening, and you disagree about some matter. In the past, you might have spent hours in a library or bookstore trying to find the right answer to this question. However, after five minutes searching on the Internet, you’re sure to have it.
Or, perhaps you’re too busy to go to the grocery (雜貨) store—maybe you’re sick at home with no food in the refrigerator. You can simply order some online, and someone will deliver them to you. This can save you a lot of time during a busy day, and it can allow you to stay at home, where you are warm and comfortable, when you are sick.
Last, maybe you want to go on vacation, but you don’t know where to go. With the Internet, you can pick a place, check out hotels, and then book a plane ticket easily. The Internet makes it possible to decide to go on vacation one evening and then leave the next morning with everything already arranged. Think how much extra time you save that way, which you can then use when you go on vacation!
It’s clear how, in many different ways, using the Internet can make your life much more efficient. But remember—that’s only if you use it responsibly. If you spend too much time playing online games, downloading songs or movies, or chatting in chat rooms, you might find that the Internet has a rather different quiet effect on your life: instead of having more time to use, you’ll actually have no time left for anything else at all.
