Hong Kong has lost its sky. The city is frequently _____6_____ in a noxious smog, and many days the only place you can see a clear shot of the famously picturesque skyline is in ads for luxury apartments. Urban esthetics _____7_____ , the damage to Hong Kong residents’ lungs may be worse. “The only safe conclusion is that air pollution is having a very serious _____8_____ effect on the health of people of all ages,” says Dr. Anthony Hedley, chairman of the Department of Community Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. The only good news is that air pollution has become so severe that Hong Kongers are finally ready to force their leaders to act. And the city’s business community is pushing for solutions. The answers are out there: the government’s Council for Sustainable Development in early May 2006 released a number of smart anti-pollution _____9_____ , such as restricting vehicle use on high-pollution days, and asking electricity producers to use only clean coal or low-polluting natural gas by 2010. In the meantime, many experts doubt whether Hong Kong’s bureaucracy has the imagination or the will to implement those ideas. Christine Loh, CEO of the local think tank Civic Exchange, says that they just do not have the kind of political leadership now.

請依下文回答第 25 題至第 27 題  As California psychologist Wendy Mogel points out in The Blessing of a Skinned Knee, today’s parents seemto care a great deal about their children feeling good—and often forget to teach them about being good. Onestriking characteristic of children who have been given too much is a blunted sense of empathy for others, although they have finely tuned concern for themselves. Indulged children make bad roommates and even worsespouses. The guiding principle of parenting here—that the child has to be happy no matter what, and the corollarythat more will make them happier—has become well ingrained. The result is an entitled and petulant set of adultchildren and an increasingly resentful group of parents. Erik Erikson, the late psychologist who described thestages of development over a person’s life span, characterized late childhood as one of industry versus inferiority.Children learn both who they are and who they are not by trying, and then either succeeding or failing. They alsodevelop resilience—the invaluable ability to bounce back from the inevitable slings and arrows of life. Too oftentoday, parents’ largesse deprives the child of this sense of exerting his or her own power.

Some 66m years ago Earth was hit by a space rock reckoned to have been 10km across. The resulting chaos caused the extinction of dinosaurs and many other species, opening the way for the age of mammals-and ultimately humans. It also left a big hole in what is now southern Mexico. That hole is one of only three known of similar dimensions (the other two are Vredefort in South Africa and Sudbury in Canada). And this is odd. For, during the billions of years that Earth has had a solid crust, many more than three big asteroids might have been expected to have hit it.
That thought led Brandon Johnson of the MIT and Timothy Bowling of Purdue University in Indiana, to wonder how many other craters have vanished, either by erosion or by being swallowed into Earth’s interior as its crust moves around, and therefore whether it is likely that some have survived and been overlooked. They have just published their analysis in Geology.
Earth’s crust formed more than 4 billion years ago, but the oldest surviving blocks of it large enough to harbor craters date back only 3.5 billion years. What is known of the sizes and orbits of modern asteroids suggests that, if things have not changed over the aeons, about 14 big asteroids (defined as having a diameter of more than 7.4km, which would cause a crater at least 85km in diameter) should hit Earth every billion years. That means 49, give or take seven, over the past 3.5 billion years. Such impacts may have been more common in the past, when more big asteroids were around. Allowing for this, Earth would have been hit by 113, give or take 11, of them. Either way, a lot of craters are missing.

請依下文回答第 16 題至第 20 題
Issues concerning women’s bodily integrity and autonomy, such as abortion, rape, and sterilization, are subject to strong opinions that give rise to equally charged political policies. As with other issues pertaining to women’s bodies, prostitution discourse is largely concerned with determining whether this social practice is exploitative, empowering, or a consequence of immorality.
Prostitution is here defined as a social practice by which men gain sexual access to the bodies of predominantly women, children, and sometimes other men, through the exchange of money, goods, or housing.Prostitution, as a social construct, arises from “men’s dominance and women’s subordination.”
Most people take one of three salient positions on prostitution. The first position argues that prostitution is a consequence of deficient moral character. This position draws heavily from patriarchal and religious traditions that equate female sexuality with temptation and male sexuality with dominance and sanctioned insatiability. The second position, the “sex work” position, asserts that prostitution is a valid form of labor and argues that prostitution is not inherently harmful to women. This position further contends that women have aright to decide what they will do with their bodies and that sex work, though oppressive for some, is potentially both lucrative and empowering for other women. The third position asserts that prostitution is a consequence of social, political, and economic inequality and argues that women are predominantly conscripted into prostitution because of their social vulnerability. Political regulation of prostitution activity varies according to each nation’s underlying economic and social justice commitments.

【題組】20 Why may prostitution be argued to empower women?
(A) Prostituted women could endure extensive sexual and physical violence.
(B) Sex work is potentially harmful in that it is lucrative.
(C) Women could liberate their body as they please.
(D) Prostitution reflects women’s demand for social justice.
