With the coming of September, I recall the day when I first met Alan. It was a rainy day. He seemed very handsome, but I didn’t love him because of that. I was moved by the tenderness in his blue eyes.
As there was almost nothing in our room, it was difficult to call it “home.” Although we were very poor, we believed that we were the happiest couple in the world. In fact, I felt great happiness even when I served him a cup of tea. We often sat watching the stars without a word. His smile gave me the comfortable feeling of being loved.
One rainy day he suddenly disappeared. He left me a letter which began, “I don’t want to make you
unhappy, my dear….”I didn’t weep over the letter because I knew Alan would be in my heart forever. Even now I cannot abandon the thought that Alan will come back to me one day and gently whisper, “Look, my darling Miranda. Look how beautiful the stars are shining tonight!”
Love in September left me with a lasting memory.… Yes, a lasting memory!

I tell my students that addressing people by “sir” or “ma’am” comes in handy in their interaction with others. Case in point: I was on the phone recently with the phone company discussing the inaccuracies of my bill. The lady I spoke to was not helpful and seemed annoyed. Then, in the midst of the conversation, I threw in a “yes ma’am,” and her entire attitude changed. She became far more helpful and easy to deal with, and she ended up cutting my bill in half, which was more than I had even asked for. Some of my students in Harlem were interviewed for a chance to attend a high-rated junior high school. The school only had thirty openings for the following year, and twelve of my students were among the numerous kids across the city who applied for the spots. I practiced what the interview would be like with my students, and one main thing I stressed was, “Make sure you say ‘yes, ma’am’ or ‘no, sir’ no matter what!” Weeks after the interviews, I was delighted to hear that all twelve of my students had been accepted. When I talked with the admissions director at the school, the main comment he made over and over was how polite my students were in their interviews. It seems like just such a simple thing to do, but it gets results. 【題組】 28 Why did the phone company lady agree to cut the author’s bill in half?

The Police Uniform: To Wear or Not Wear?
The police uniform with its attendant gun and badge is like a neon sign. When you walk into a room wearing a
uniform, attention is immediately drawn to you. The uniform communicates an immediate and powerful message:
authority, security, integrity, trust, safety—and to some, a threat. For some people the uniform has a very positive effect,
which allows you to establish an immediate rapport with many groups. Wearing your uniform sends a dual message that
you are serious about your topic and that your department supports you. It conveys to an audience that you know what the
options are and how best to handle a situation.
For others, the uniform can be intimidating. Some people are uncomfortable in the presence of authority, and the
uniform is a symbol of authority. A hostile audience has a tendency to talk to the uniform and not to the person in the
uniform. In such situations you might want to wear street clothes, which can convey several meanings. You can be all
business, wearing a suit. You can convey a more relaxed message with casual attire. (The Strategic Dressing chart
provides some general guidelines for using clothing to set a tone.) Each article of clothing worn for a specific situation
conveys a unique message about you as an officer and as a person. Repeated contact will let the community come to
know you more as a person who wears a uniform and less as a uniform with a person in it.
