Passage A
As the scholar James Twitchell observes, advertising has become “our cultural literacy—it’s what we know.” Twitchell, author of a book called Adcult USA and a professor at the University of Florida, says his students share no common culture of books or history; what they share is a knowledge of commercials. When he questions them at random about concepts from “The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy,” he says he is likely to draw a blank. When, however, he recites a commercial jingle, his students “instantaneously know it, and they’re exultant,” he says. “They actually think Benetton ads are profound. To them, advertising is high culture.”
26. What is the main idea of the paragraph?
(A) Advertising is found everywhere.
(B) Advertising is as pervasive as common culture.
(C) Advertising is defined as important as culture in the dictionary.
(D) Advertising is so effective that university students acknowledge it better than anything else.
27. Choose the CORRECT one.

(B) Twitchell’s students conceive advertising the high culture.
(C) Twitchell’s students show high interest in studying culture.
(D) Twitchell’s students are important to Benetton.

(B) He draws a blank answer to his students.
(C) His students give weird answers to the question.
(D) His students draw a blank to the question.
Passage B
Those who love summer never welcome the shorter days and the lower temperatures. They might become slightly melancholy when they see the flowers of summer disappearing and the leaves falling from the trees. In most cases this is just a passing feeling, but some people are more seriously affected. Sufferers from a condition called seasonal affective disorder, for example, can easily become depressed when the amount of daylight decreases. The condition (which has the very appropriate acronym SAD) is often treated by ‘light therapy’, which means using a special lamp indoors during the winter months to simulate daylight.
Some people, of course, find that this is their favorite season, maybe because they love the freshness of the air after the heat of summer, or the countless shades of red, gold and yellow in the leaves. The French philosopher Albert Camus (1913-60) showed he belonged to this group when he said ‘It is a second spring when every leaf is a flower’.
29. What season is it?
(A) Spring (B) Summer (C) Autumn (D) Winter
30. When is the most favorable season that people suffer SAD most?
(A) Spring (B) Summer (C) Autumn (D) Winter
31. Which word has the same meaning as “melancholy”?
(A) countless (B) decreased (C) depressed (D) disappeared
32. Why did Albert Camus say ‘It is a second spring when every leaf is a flower’?
(A) Because it is as colorful as the spring is. (B) Because leaves turn into flowers.
(C) Because he can’t distinguish leaves from flowers. (D) Because he is color blind.
33. Which of the following words is not an acronym?
(A) NBA (B) WTO (C) USA (D) mom
Passage C
Scientists have now confirmed what many pet owners have long believed: some dogs have a more gloomy view of life than others. Dogs that were generally calm when left alone were also found to have an optimistic attitude, while those that barked, relieved themselves and destroyed furniture seemed to be more pessimistic, according to a study done at Bristol University. Michael Mendl, head of animal welfare and behavior at the university, said that if a dog was anxious when left alone by its owner, it would be pessimistic in its behavior. The research suggests that the problems caused by some dogs when they are left alone could indicate deeper emotional problems.
“Owners see this kind of anxious behavior in dogs in different ways. Some are very worried, some relinquish the dog to a dog’s home, but others think the dog is happy or just being spiteful,” said Mendl. “Some of these dogs may have emotional issues and owners should talk to their vets about possible treatments,” he added.
34. Which of these dogs are more likely to be optimistic, according to the study?
(A) Ones that bark when left alone.
(B) Ones that remain calm when left alone.
(C) Ones that destroy furniture when left alone.
(D) Ones that relieve themselves when left alone.
35. What do the researchers suggest the owners do to anxious behavior in dogs?
(A) Leave the dog being intentionally spiteful.
(B) Take the dog to a refuge.
(C) Talk to their vets.
(D) Keep being worried.
