I. Essay writing(50%)
In year of 2013, the United Daily News chose “fake” (假) due to the food safety scandals, whereas Taiwan Realty chose “worry” (憂) in that people are worrying about not being able to buy a home with one’s current income in Taiwan. In this essay, please use "My Word of the Year in 2013" as the topic and write an essay about this hot issue within 300 words. Remember to support your arguments with examples.
II. Translation
(a) Translate the following sentences into Chinese (25%)
Mandela taught us the power of action, but also ideas; the importance of reason and arguments; the need to study not only those you agree with, but those who you don't. He understood that ideas cannot be contained by prison walls, or extinguished by a sniper's bullet. He turned his trial into an indictment of apartheid because of his eloquence and passion, but also his training as an advocate. He used decades in prison to sharpen his arguments, but also to spread his thirst for knowledge to others in the movement. And he learned the language and customs of his oppressor so that one day he might better convey to them how their own freedom depended upon his.
(b) Translate the following sentences into English (25%)
我理想中的大學，應當是一個訓練公民的地方……大學要鼓勵學生接觸社會問題，參與社會問題，提出社會問題，甚至嘗試去解決社會問題。這樣的大學，絕對不應當是一個與世隔絕的象牙塔，它要引導學生了解自己作為一個公民，對社會應當盡到什麼樣的義務。這樣的大學，學生會更加關心對抗跨國集團的資本壟斷，關心其他個人或群體是否被社會主流或者制度所羞辱，關心政府政策的社會效應。無論是校方還是教師，也應當通過參與公共事務以身作則地教導學生，如何去成為一個合格的公民，而不僅僅是人民。
