As the elderly population increases and the demand for inclusive public transportation systems grows
worldwide, priority seating has become a common feature. These priority seats are not solely for the elderly, as they
also accommodate those in need, such as the disabled, pregnant women, and the injured. In some countries, issues
related to these seats on public transport have been highlighted and discussed.
Priority seating in Taiwan’s public transport is generating much discussion, partly because of misuse or
misunderstanding of these seats. For example, a TV news video showed that a woman was being pulled from a
priority seat even though she needed it due to a health condition. On the other hand, according to the news
comments, some people worry that taking these seats might be a symbol of being unfair or indifferent. All these
factors indicate that we need better ways to inform people about how and when to use priority seating. In response
to this, Taiwan is currently reevaluating its disability rights laws for priority seat eligibility. In Japan, transportation
firms have been adding more of these special seats, but the way they set it up varies. For example, on Japan’s bullet
trains, there are good spots for wheelchair users, but they do not really label any seats as “priority” on such trains
because passengers usually reserve seats beforehand. A unique study in China explored the behavior of around 400
university students regarding yielding their seats in public transport. It was found that older university students or
those who were diligent in their studies were more likely to offer their seats to those in need. In addition, empathy
was discovered to be a significant factor in the decision to offer a seat. Based on these insights, the study suggested
establishing soft measures or policies to ensure seating for those who need it.
Creating a user-friendly transit environment is not just about signs and seats. It is about understanding and
caring for one another. Everyone should feel comfortable and valued while traveling on these public transportation
systems.
