The recent oil spill from the Greek cargo ship Amorgos has seriously damaged the precious natural
environment of southern Taiwan. The event is considered the most serious “natural disaster” 1 in
Taiwan’s environmental history. Almost a month after the spill, when most people thought that it was
too 2 , the government started to take action to clean up the spill. At that time, a large 3 of
soldiers and volunteer workers were sent to the disaster area to collect the spilt oil along the seashore.
