把that引導的形容詞子句先略過不看
By the garden over there stands an apple tree. (甚至over there也不看)
=>By the garden stands an apple tree. (接著再還原) =>An apple tree stands by the garden. 反過來想就能夠知道要填stands 此類句子很多 eg. A girl sits in the chair. => In the chair sits a girl. 通常此類的句子都是由於主詞過長，而採用倒裝

總而言之本來的句子是"stands by"的倒裝，把by提到最前面，所以"stands"不能省，當然也不能選別的選項了。
上面的排版一直亂掉，無法換行，sorry~~
