Able-bodied people rarely know how to act toward the disabled. Many usually feel uneasy around people who are
physically impaired. Their reactions are even worse in the 43 of the mentally impaired. Unfortunately, our society
provides neither any real help for those who are handicapped nor a place 44 which they feel they can usefully belong
and contribute their skills. Worse 45 , the vast majority of people who are not disabled are not prepared for coming
into contact with the disabled. As a result, most normal people—or rather non-disabled people—appear as foes 46
friends to the physically and mentally impaired.
