However, May 27, 1995 was the day that everything changed for Christopher Reeve. The actor, who played this universally recognized character in the movies, fell off his horse while riding. Reeve's spine was seriously injured, and the incident left his head and neck disconnected. Reeve had to be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Reeve's life became difficult ever since. At first, a tube had to go down his throat and into his lungs to help him breathe, and he had to have dangerous surgery to connect his head and his neck. Despite being seriously injured, Reeve didn't let this challenge stand in his way. He made every effort to lead a normal life. He even resumed acting and started directing. His wife, Dana, said that this work filled him with energy and improved his health. He created the Christopher Reeve Foundation, which is dedicated to raising funds for research on spinal injury, finding treatment, and improving the quality of life for the disabled. His autobiography, Still Me, was on the New York Times Best Seller list for eleven weeks, and he won a Grammy in 1999 for narrating his own book. When the first Superman movie was released, Reeve was frequently asked, "What is a hero?" He would say that a hero is someone who thinks little of the consequences and rushes to act courageously. After his accident, his answer changed. He believed that a hero is an ordinary person with the strength to continue despite all the obstacles.
