外用類固醇藥物能有效控制皮膚發炎，因此適用於多種皮膚病，例如濕疹、過敏性皮膚炎及牛皮癬等。 外用類固醇藥物能消炎，但並不能殺菌，反而會助長細菌滋生，所以絕對不能用於感染性皮膚病，例如癬和瘡等。
