The study of art history is too often isolated from the practice of art. Sometimes at the college level, art history is taught with other histories in a college of Arts and Sciences or Social Sciences; the practice of art, the actual painting or sculpturing, is located in a different college entirely, such as in a college of Fine Arts or Performing Arts. And even the area of design may be located in a third college, along with weaving and pottery. There are some historical reasons for this. Art history has had a separate existence from art, often being more attached to museums, archaeology, and social history, and considered more intuitive, more the province of the talented, supported by patrons and free to reflect on society. Design has traditionally been associated with industry, with a vocation, and with the economics of producing and merchandising.
