that 用做關係代名詞    

    That最常用來取代who/whom/which

    that當關代的兩個限制如下

    a. 只能用在限定用法(參閱限定用法)，換句話說，that前面不加逗點

    b. that之前不能有介系詞 

   在下列情況下，關代只用that，不用who/whom/which

    1. 序數之後 (first/second......)

       例. He was the first man that came up in my mind.

    2. 最高級之後 (best/most+adj.....)

       例. He is the best coach that I have ever seen.

    3. the very+ N. (此為加強語氣的慣用法)

       例. She is the very gril that I saw last week.


    4. All 之後 (all/every....表全部語詞後)

       例....

    6. 句中有兩個相同的關代時 (避免重複)

       例. He is smart, which is a fact that is known to us.

            原句= He is smart, which is a fact which is known to us.

    7. 關代在be動詞後當補語時 (表示身分)

       例. She is not the girl that she once was.

           (她已不是當年的她了)

    8. 兩個名詞性質不同，卻共用一個關代時

       例. Look at the man and the dog that are walking on the beach.

           (看那對正在海灘上散步的男人和狗--人和狗是不同性質的名詞)

    例. I am happy that I have passed the exam.
