With a sensory processing preference of sensory sensitivity, the person notices things that others do not notice. ....The individual with a processing preference of sensation avoiding creates or chooses environments that reduce sensory input. .... People with low registration tend to miss input that others take in. ....Similar to the sensation avoiders, sensation seeking individuals actively engage with their environment to meet their sensory needs.

With a sensory processing preference of sensory sensitivity, the person notices things that others do not notice. This can lead to a heightened awareness of the environment and more information with which to make decisions. In contrast, people who are sensory sensitive can be highly distractible and more likely to experience discomfort in high-intensity environments.

The individual with a processing preference of sensation avoiding creates or chooses environments that reduce sensory input. This individual can do well in low stimulus situations or settings that others find dull. In addition, sensation avoiders tend to be skilled at adapting environments to meet their needs. Conversely, these individuals may miss important information and become distressed in situations in which they cannot control the environment.

The primary intervention approach using the Dunn (1997) model involves designing environments to meet an individual's sensory processing preferences.

The other continuum, behavioral response/self-regulation, moves from passive to active.
