Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis are commonly identified pathogens in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) among sexually active pre-menopausal females. Mycoplasma genitalium is also likely to be a cause in the pre-menopausal group. E. coli and colonic anaerobes may be responsible for the rare cases of PID seen in post-menopausal women. Very rare pathogens identified include Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and the agents of actinomycosis.
