When early European explorers traveled to the western part of North America, they came across a
group of tribes known as the Oasis people, who lived in what is now the southwestern United States and
northern Mexico. Since the region is hot and dry, these people had to live near water sources. They had
their own local governments and often lived in towns and villages, so Spanish explorers called them the
Pueblo, which means “village” in Spanish.
The Oasis people farmed the land and grew corn and cotton. They didn’t eat much meat, but they
sometimes ate rabbits. They ate little fish, because their desert habitat had few lakes or rivers for fishing.
The Oasis people were the first Americans known to make clothes from cotton. The men and women
both wore long hair. These people were great builders. They used sandstone and a type of sandy clay
called adobe to build rectangular home. The rooms were built next to or on top of each other, like
modern apartments.
Although the desert area where they lived is now part of America and Mexico, descendants of the
Oasis people continue to live there and follow their ancestors’ customs and beliefs.
