語用學主要是研究: 在不同的語境（context）下，我們對於語義解釋的影響。語境（context）所指的就是我們說話時的環境，依照不同的環境背景，一個詞語所表現出來的意思也就大不相同，例如，我們在過去或現在討論交通和代步工具時，”火車”和”機車”只是一種交通工具的名稱而已，現在隨著時代的進步，新新人類不斷的創字加以註解，機車、火車已經不再只是字面上的解釋，因此隨著環境時間的不同而有另一個深層的意思，所以我們可以說語境對於思考字的意思有很重要的作用。
