食道功能
1.隨意期 (voluntary phase）〔口~口咽）：可隨意引發。

2.不隨意期 (involuntary phase ）：
分為二個階段：

1.咽部階段（pharyngeal stage）（口咽~食道）：食團進入口咽後，即引起吞嚥反射，於是被動的咽期隨之開始，此期呼吸道暫時關開，呼吸暫停。
本期的動作包括：
①舌上升頂住軟腭，腭咽肌將軟腭上提而蓋住後鼻孔，以免食物進入鼻咽。
②舌骨及喉上提，而使會厭軟骨向後蓋住喉的入口，以防食物進入喉。
③咽下縮肌舒張，傸喉咽與食道間的開口更寬。
④食道上括約肌 (upper esophagcal sphincter)舒張、咽上縮肌收縮，將食團推向食道。(C)

2.食道階段(esophageal stage）〔食道~胃）
①食團進人食道後，經由食道的蠕動 （肌肉層的功能之一，受延髓控制），而將其推向胃。
②食團上方是環肌層收縮，將食團往下擠；食團的下方則是縱肌層收縮，將食道壁往外突；如此反覆進行，直至將食團送至胃為止。
③食道下括約肌 （1ower esophagcal sphincter） 舒張，使食物順利進入胃中。(B)
