很多人也知道 by Ving 是 ”藉由 ... (方式/行為)” 的意思

現在請大家看看以下這個句子出了什麼問題:

The teacher punished her students by running around the school.

寫這個句子的人顯然是要表達 ”老師處罰學生跑步” 這樣的基本意思

但是各位看出這個英文句子的錯誤了嗎?

如果把這個意思寫成上面那句英文

那麼意思會變成: 這名老師以(自己)跑步的方式來處罰她的學生

也就是說是老師去跑步來做為對學生的懲罰

( 這種懲罰可能會讓學生很開心吧.......)

這是很多人常犯的一個錯, 原因是沒有把句子想得很透徹, 中間少了一截

清楚地說, 這個句子應該是 ”老師以要學生們跑步的方式來處罰他們”

所以正確的說法應該是: The teacher punished her students by having them run around the school.

 

在這個句子裡必須用到使役動詞 have + 受詞 + 原形動詞的句型

來表示 ” 叫 / 命令 某人去做某事”

大家再想想, 如果改成 ”校長處罰這些學生去掃廁所” 怎麼說呢?

答案是: The principal punished the students by having them clean the restroom(s).

千萬不要說或寫成: The principal punished the students by cleaning the restroom(s).

不然就變成是校長自己去掃廁所來當作處罰學生的方式囉...... (應該沒有這麼 ”熱血” 的校長吧......)
