a number of+Ns+動詞(複數)
A number of people join the party this night.(一些人參加了今晚的派對)

the number of表示｢...的數量」，用於表達某樣東西的｢數量」，所以動詞用單數。
the number of+Ns+動詞(單數)
The number of apples is 7.(蘋果的數量是7個)

numbers of表示｢很多...、大量...」，既然是很多，而且numbers也加了s，所以動詞也要用複數。
