The ryanodine receptor is a calcium release channel located in the sarcoplasmic reticulum terminal cisternal membrane that links the T tubule to the sarcoplasmic reticulum during excitation-contraction coupling.

Uncontrolled intracytoplasmic calcium release because of abnormal ryanodine receptor activity leads to excessive contraction with resultant heat production.
