最初的症狀是嘔吐接著意識不清；流行性感冒也會有嘔吐的情形，但流行性感冒在48小時之內嘔吐就會緩解；如果在流行性感冒快好的時候，又突然產生嚴重嘔吐及意識不清，伴隨著躁動、僵硬及最後昏迷的現象。則要懷疑是否為雷氏症候群，同時也要考慮腦炎的可能。
