Questions 37 - 40 The Dreamliner Boeing 787, also known as the “Dreamliner,” has become a bit of a nightmare for the giant American airplane manufacturer. The massive, futuristic airplane has suffered from various issues during the early stages of its life, including battery problems, a cracked cockpit window, leaks, brake problems, and an electrical fire. In January 2013, a 787 flight leaving Japan started experiencing problems when the plane’s batteries melted, forcing pilots to land the plane shortly after take-off. All Nippon Airways (ANA) grounded its seventeen 787 planes and Japan Airlines followed suit by pulling back its seven Dreamliners to their hangars. Shortly afterward, it was learned that ANA had recently replaced ten batteries on its 787 planes and notified Boeing of the problems. The Dreamliner was at one point considered by many to be Boeing’s most advanced plane, and was bought up by some of the largest airlines in the world. It features many luxurious amenities, lots of space, and is Boeing’s most fuel-efficient plane. After the fiasco, Boeing proposed to install batteries in metal boxes as a temporary solution while the company redesigns existing batteries. If the plan is approved, 787s could take to the skies again.
