作者先是提到有些狗額頭毛色會長出兩個點，這兩個假眼有助於強化牠們的眼神和表情。然後說『這種效果其實很神話，因為民間傳說裡不是常常說你得在怪物們眼睛睜大大的時候才接近牠們，因為牠們眼睛大睜的時候一定是熟睡的時候嗎？』（就是說怪物們大睜的都是假眼啦）
我想他的意思是說，狗長兩個假眼真的有用嗎？人的老古傳說裡都說越像眼睛的越假呢！所以作者應該是拿人的傳說來嘲謔地懷疑自然之『讓動物生出假眼』到底會不會有用啊。這就跟再前一句也是很不好譯的『The very form of the eye lends itself to being the natural image of its own function. Nature herself has made play with this fact, 』要一起看了。
這段短文節引的太少，若是更長些或有機會讀全文的話，才比較好掌握這位作者的慣用口吻與文風和他確切的意思。
