For centuries, the native people in Taiwan were forced to accept the language of Han and rulers, plus the influence of ethnic migration and modern life, resulting in a great loss of language and ethnic cultural identity. For example, in about 26 known indigenous languages of Taiwan (collectively known as Taiwan South Island language), at least 10 languages have disappeared, 5 are dying, and many other languages are on the brink of extinction. Because a considerable number of linguists believe that Taiwan is the birthplace of the south island nation, these languages have great historical significance.
