Florida: Charges in Rebecca Sedwick 'bullying death'
Two girls in the US state of Florida have been arrested yesterday in connection
with the death of another girl who authorities say took her own life after
months of relentless online bullying.
The two girls, aged 12 and 14, of Lakeland, Florida, have been charged with felony
aggravated stalking, and are said to have bullied Rebecca Sedwick online for a
year. Authorities said she was "terrorized" online by up to 15 former friends.
Rebecca jumped to her death from a toweron 9 September.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd confirmed the bullying campaign had begun last
year after the 14-year-old girl objected to Rebecca dating a boy whom she had been
seeing. The girls bullied Rebecca through online message boards and mobile text
messages, authorities told the news media.
Mr. Grady toldreporters authorities had arrested the 14-year-old on Monday for
fear she would offendother girls. "We decided that we can't leave her out there," he
stated. "Who else is she going to torment, who else is she going to harass?"
The 14-year-old girl's mother complained to the Associated Press news agency:
"My daughter's a good girl and I'm 100% sure that whatever they're saying about
my daughter is not true." Authorities seized some of the girls' computers and
mobile phones during the course of the investigation.
2 days before Rebecca Sedwick’s funeralon 16 September, the two female suspects
were charged under Florida's cyber stalking civil statute, which allows public
schools to discipline students for harassment.
Pallbearers of Rebecca Sedwick’s coffin wore shirts printed with anti-bullying
messages.

Scientists have discovered a new planet that may be able to support human life,
according to a new study.
The study, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society on
Thursday, named the new planet Gliese 12 b. Scientists said in the study that the
planet is “the nearest, transiting temperate, Earth-sized planet found to date.”
The international team of scientists discovered the planet by using NASA’s
Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Scientists say that it’s one of the few
rocky planets discovered that has the potential for humans to survive on, but that the
planet is 40 light years away.
Gliese 12 b is only a little smaller than Earth. It’s an “exoplanet,” which means
that it’s a planet outside of our solar system. The planet orbits a small and cool red
dwarf star. The planet also bears some similarities to Venus, which is often dubbed
Earth’s “twin” because of the similarities they share.
A year on Gliese 12 b is just 12.8 days on Earth because the planet orbits its
star so closely. The planet receives about 1.6 times more energy from its star than
Earth does from the sun, scientists said.
The planet has an average estimated surface temperature only 50°F warmer
5
than Earth’s.
“Thrillingly, this planet is the closest Earth-sized and temperature planet we
know,” Thomas Wilson, one of the study’s authors, told BBC. “Planets like Gliese
12 b are very few and far between, so for us to be able to examine one this closely
and learn about its atmosphere and temperature is very rare.”
In order to find out if Gliese 12 b could support human life, scientists will need
to determine if it has an atmosphere similar to Earth—one that could have water on
its surface, since that is essential for a planet to be habitable. But scientists said they
were still unsure what kind of atmosphere it has—if any at all. Scientists said the
planet was a good candidate for further atmospheric study.

Timothy Fields worked in almost obscurity. This unsung composer spent his
spare time creating some of the most outstanding pieces of American music. Although
he studied music in The Juilliard School, Fields followed a career in the car company,
and relegated his composing to vacation, weekends, holidays, and the long winter
evenings of New England. His most important works were written between 1899 and
1913 at his country house in New Hampshire. Fields stopped composing in 1916 after
suffering a nervous breakdown.
Although Fields was far ahead of his time, his attitudes also precluded broad
public acceptance. The enormous complexity of his work, incorporating fragments of
county dances, dancehall tunes, hymns, brass band marches, and patriotic anthems,
daunts the casual listener. Their extraordinary originality anticipates later
developments of other musicians, but hardly attracts popular tastes. The polytonality
and dissonance Fields applied so brilliantly repel many an unschooled audience.
Fields also insisted that everyone should enjoy his music for free, so commercial
publication was impossible.
Fields first received some recognition in 1936, with the performance of his
second piano sonata, which had been finished in 1915. Fields wrote his Third
Symphony between 1899 to 1905; it was first performed by the Philharmonic
Symphony Orchestra of Boston under Benjamin Langston in 1924. He completed his
Fourth Symphony in 1911, but it had to wait 23 years for its premiere. The Fifth
Symphony, written between 1910 and 1913, was finally performed in 1963, twelve
years after its composer's death.
Timothy Fields' contribution to modern music was finally recognized in 1949,
when his Fourth Symphony won the Pulitzer Prize, nearly 40 years after its
completion. Even then, Fields showed his disdain for critics, commenting that prizes
were badges of mediocrity and giving away the prize money.
