Gene therapy may be in its infancy, but great hopes for its potential to treat everything from cancer to Alzheimer’s to heart disease are forcing it to grow up fast. After two decades of lab research, gene treatments are increasingly making their way into human clinical trials. The bulk of research so far has focused on getting a gene to its destination and coaxing it to turn on once inside a cell. On their own, genes can’t pass through cell membranes, and much effort has been spent to trick cells into accepting foreign genes. The most efficient couriers are so-called viral vectors: viruses whose genomes have been swapped out for therapeutic genes. Like Trojan horses, they slip genes into target cells undetected. But as scientists are learning, there is no safe way to hijack a virus. The vectors sometimes trigger immune reactions. And once the genes are inside a cell, there is no way to be sure they will function as intended. Case in point: a Paris gene therapy trial to treat SCIDs, or the “bubble boy disease,” restored immune function in nine of 10 patients. But it was later revealed that two of them had developed leukemia.

Israeli scientists have germinated a date seed nearly 2,000 years old.
The seed was taken from an excavation at Masada, the cliff fortress where, in A.D. 73, 960 Jewish zealots died by  their own hand rather than surrendered to the Romans. The point is to find out what was so exceptional about the date palm of Judea, praised in the Bible for its shade, food, beauty and medicinal qualities, but long ago destroyed by the crusaders.
Dr. Sallon, who runs a project on medicinal plants of the Middle East, said the date palm in ancient times symbolized the tree of life. But Sallon’s co-worker, Dr. Solowey, who is growing the seed in quarantine, said plants grown from ancient seeds “usually keel over and die soon.”
Three date seeds from the Masada dig were found in a storeroom and are presumably from dates eaten by the defenders, Dr. Sallon said.
Dr. Solowey planted the date seeds at the end of January. “It wasn’t a project with a high priority,” she said. “I had no idea if the food in the seed was still good. But about six weeks later, one of these came up.”
Radiocarbon dating showed the seed to be 1990 years old, plus or minus 50 years. So it dates from 35 B.C. to A.D. 65, shortly before the Roman siege.
Dates need to grow 30 years to reach maturity and can live as long as 200 years. It is the female date that is considered holy and that bears fruit. “If it’s a male, it will just be a curiosity,” Dr. Solowey said.

【題組】46 The date seed was probably left by _____.
(A) the Jewish zealots who died in A.D. 73
(B) the Romans who killed the Jewish in A.D. 73
(C) the Jewish who surrendered to the Romans in A.D. 73
(D) the crusaders who conquered the people at Masada in A.D. 73

We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike the roads in Robert Frost’s familiar poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies 41 . The other fork of the road—the one “less traveled by”— offers our last, our only chance to reach a destination that assures the 42 of our earth. The choice is ours to make. If, having endured much, we have at last asserted our “right to know,” and 43 , knowing, we have concluded that we are being asked to take senseless and frightening risks, then we should no longer accept the counsel of those who tell us that we must fill our world with poisonous chemicals; we should look about and see what other course is open to us. A truly extraordinary variety of 44 to the chemical control of insects are available. Some are already in use and have achieved brilliant success. Others are in the stage of laboratory testing. Still others are little more than ideas in the minds of imaginative scientists, waiting for the opportunity to put them to the test.

Ernest Shackleton was a British explorer who led three expeditions to the South Pole during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His voyages to the South Pole have acquired epic status and he is considered one of Britain's greatest explorers. Shackleton was born on 15 February 1874 in Ireland. His family moved to London where he was educated. He then joined the merchant navy when he was 16. In 1898, he qualified as a master mariner and was keen to explore the poles.
In 1901, Shackleton was chosen to go on the Antarctic expedition led by British naval officer Robert Falcon Scott. Shackleton and Scott trekked towards the South Pole, which had yet to be reached by humans, in extremely difficult conditions. They got closer than anyone had come before, but Shackleton fell seriously ill and had to return home.
In 1908, Shackleton was able to persuade wealthy backers to fund his own expedition, so he could return to the Antarctic as the leader of his own expedition. The expedition made many important scientific discoveries and set a record by coming even closer to the South Pole than before. The success of the expedition earned Shackleton knighthood on his return to Britain.
Shackleton made his third trip to the Antarctic with the ship 'Endurance' in 1914, an expedition that has acquired epic status. The plan was to cross Antarctica via the South Pole but in early in 1915, the ship became trapped in the ice, and ten months later sank. The crew had already abandoned the ship and set off in three small boats, to Elephant Island. From there six crew members including Shackleton and the captain planned to sail to South Georgia to get help. They used a lifeboat across the treacherous seas of the South Atlantic. They managed to reach the island of South Georgia and were able to get help from the Chilean government. In August 1916, the men left behind on Elephant Island were rescued. In the end, Shackleton was able to lead all 27 of his men to safety.
After World War I was over, Shackleton organized another expedition, which aimed to circumnavigate the Antarctic continent. But on 5 January 1922 he died of a heart attack off South Georgia and was buried on the island.
