Harry’s girl-friend’s father, Mr. Ford, was a very conservative kind of man. Harry had known him most of his life, but he seemed to be unusually strict and did not seem to approve of young people. So Harry didn’t know exactly what to expect when he asked Mr. Ford if he could marry his daughter. Harry asked very politely for permission to marry his daughter. There was a long silence while Mr. Ford looked Harry up and down. Finally, Mr. Ford went over to his desk and wrote something on a piece of paper. He then pinned the paper to his daughter’s dress and gently pushed her towards Harry. He then left the room without saying anything. Harry quickly looked at the note and was both happy and surprised to read it. It said: “With the compliments of the maker.”

Reading test: Words are concrete, used to express concrete thoughts and feelings and to deliver practical information; music is, by its very nature, abstract. When the two are put together, the resulting tension creates an excitement and an extra dimension which is denied to the spoken theater. For example, Shakespeare’s Othello is a great play, and Verdi’s Otello which is based on it is a great opera. I think that, if one had seen Shakespeare’s Othello seventy times one would be hard put to it to derive much enjoyment from a seventy-first encounter. But after seventy performances of the opera one can still find new beauty and subtleties to marvel at. Similarly, Beaumarchais’ play Le mariage de Figaro, entertaining though it is, is not something one would want to see once or twice a year throughout one’s lifetime. But ask any opera-lover whether he is tired of Mozart’s opera based on the play and you will learn that he is not, for its riches are inexhaustible. Music brings a greater complexity to the spoken drama and turns it into a different kind of experience.
【題組】40 . What can we conclude after reading the passage?
(A) Comedies are easier than tragedies to be adapted into operas.
(B) Complexity brings riches for art, as in the case of an opera.
(C) It takes talented masters to successfully combine drama and music.
(D) Going to an opera is a necessary art experience in one’s life time.

46-50 Linguists subscribe to the belief that the languages of about one-third of the human race all developed from one Indo-European language. But who were the speakers of this ancient language? Linguistic detective work offers some clues: you can deduce a people’s history from the words they use. Study of some fifty ancient vocabularies has led to a reconstruction of the lifestyle of the first Indo-Europeans, a vanished people. From the words they used,it seems likely that they lived a half-settled, half-nomadic existence. They worshipped gods who are clear ancestors of Indian, Mediterranean, and Celtic deities. However, exactly who the original Indo-Europeans were and when they lived remain a hotly debated mystery. According to an early theory, they lived in Mesopotamia, but this idea was exploded by nineteenth-century archaeology. Today, some argue for the Krugan culture of the Russian steppes, others for the farming culture of the Danube valley. The most widely accepted theory locates the Indo-Europeans in a cold, northern climate where common words for snow and wolf were important. None of these prehistoric languages had a word for the sea. From this, and from our knowledge of nature, it is clear that the Indo-Europeans must have lived somewhere in northern central Europe.
【題組】49 According to the passage, what kind of study plays a major part in helping us understand the history of the Indo-Europeans?
(A) A study of prehistoric plants
(B) A study of prehistoric deities
(C) A study of prehistoric climate
(D) A study of prehistoric languages

At birth, the infant has only the most elementary emotional life. Newborns show an expression of disgust, for example, in response to strong tastes, and show surprise in reaction to sudden changes. They also show interest, which developmental psychologists consider an emotion in its own right.  By ten months, infants display the full range of what are considered the basic emotions: joy, anger, sadness, disgust, surprise, and fear. The emergence of the basic emotions during the first year or two of life seems to be programmed by a biological clock for brain development. As the appropriate brain maturation occurs, the various emotions appear in an infant’s repertory. For example, studies of brain activity in ten-month-olds show that the right frontal regions are more active during positive emotions, and the left during negative emotions.

Quick judgments about people and places can be remarkably accurate, and there is no substitute for simple logic and reflection in determining questions like which alarm clock or cellular phone is the best value. But many more important decisions—choosing the right apartment, the optimal house, the best vacation—turn on such a bewildering swarm of facts that people often become frustrated and put the whole thing temporarily out of mind. And new research suggests that this may be a rewarding strategy. In a series of experiments reported in the journal Science, a team of Dutch psychologists found that people struggling to make complex decisions did best when they were distracted and were not able to think consciously about the choice at all. The research not only backs up the common advice to “sleep on it” when facing difficult choices, but it also suggests that the unconscious brain can actively reason as well as produce weird dreams and Freudian slips.

【題組】 2 According to the passage, what does the research suggest to people who struggle to make complex decisions?
