There are many ways in which we can be peacemakers. One way is to tolerate the opinions and desires of others. Many quarrels result from arguments in which men become angry with the opinions others express. Many religious wars have arisen because one party would not tolerate the beliefs of others. Every man has a right to his opinion. However foolish an opinion may seem, we should allow it to be expressed, and should not take offense because others do not think as we do. Quarrels arise because our desires conflict with those of others. At home two children sometimes desire the same thing, and neither will give way to the other. We should be willing to give in to many of the desires of others. Unselfishness promotes peace. If all of us are willing to let others have their fair share of things, and their own place in games at home and at school, we can live in peace.

第46 題至第 50 題為題組 Prince Charles is often portrayed as bad-tempered and spoiled. There are stories that every day seven eggs are boiled for his breakfast so that he can find one that is cooked just the way he likes it. His toothpaste is squeezed onto his toothbrush for him. And his bath towel is folded over a chair in a particular way when he gets out of his royal bath. Prince Charles is eccentric, and he admits it. He talks to trees and plants. He wants to save wildlife but enjoys hunting, shooting, and fishing. He dresses for dinner, even if he's eating alone. He's a great socializer. Poets, artists, writers, broadcasters, politicians, actors, and singers all eat at his table. Arriving at Highgrove, his family home, on a Saturday afternoon, guests are entertained in the height of luxury. They are then sent on their way before lunch on Sunday, having been shown around his beautifully-kept gardens. The Prince also entertains extravagantly at Sandringham, one of the Queen's homes, at least twice a year. There are picnic lunches on the beach, expeditions to local churches, and lavish dinners with organic food. Conversation is lively, but the heir to the throne has to be careful about what he says, because he knows only too well that anything he says in private may be repeated in public. The future monarch that we don't see is a man of great humor who cares passionately about the state of the British nation and is devoted to his two children, William and Harry. He is madly in love with "his darling wife," which is how he refers to Camilla in public. Together Charles and Camilla perform royal duties, both at home and abroad. He attends over 500 public engagements a year. He visits hospitals, youth groups, performing artists, charities, and business conferences. He hosts receptions to welcome visiting heads of state and VIPs. He travels abroad extensively, as an ambassador to the United Kingdom, representing trade and industry. He works hard to promote greater understanding between different religions. Camilla shares Charles's passion for hunting and also his interest in conservation of towns and countryside. The one thing she leaves to Charles is skiing. She prefers to stay at home when he makes his annual trip to Klosters in Switzerland.

請依下文回答第 46 題至第 50 題:
Music activates many regions of the brain, including auditory, motor and limbic (associated with emotions). Such widespread activation of brain explains many beneficial emotional and cognitive music effects. The idea that music makes you smarter received considerable attention from scientists and the media. Listening to music or playing an instrument can actually make you learn better. And research confirms this by showing that music has the power to enhance some kinds of higher brain function: literacy skill, spatial-temporal reasoning, mathematical abilities (even children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder could benefit in mathematics tests from listening to music beforehand), emotional intelligence, and recall of autobiographical and episodic information.
The power of music to affect memory is quite intriguing. Earlier it has been thought that listening to classical music, particularly Mozart, enhances performance on cognitive tests. However, there are findings that show that listening to any personally enjoyable music has positive effects on cognition. Listening to music also facilitates the recall of information. Researchers have shown that certain types of music are great keys for recalling memories. Information learned while listening to a particular song can often be recalled simply by “playing” the songs mentally. Musical training has even better effect than just listening to classical music. Activities, such as playing an instrument or singing, involve both sides of the brain at the same time. The information being studied activates the left brain while the music activates the right brain. The simultaneous left and right brain action causes the brain to be more capable of processing information, hence maximizing learning and retention of information. There is clear evidence that children who take music lessons develop a better memory compared with children who have no musical training.
Moreover, music that is easy to listen to or relaxing classics improves the duration and intensity of concentration in all age groups and ability levels. It’s not clear what type of music is better, or what kind of musical structure produces the best results, but many studies have shown significant effects.

【題組】48 What can be inferred about the passage if one wants to maximize the cognitive benefits of music?
(A)Learning to play the piano may bring out larger benefits.
(B)Listening to Mozart’s music only may exert the greatest effects.
(C)Learning to process music with the left brain only may exert greater effects.
(D)Listening to background music of a movie may be the most effective method.

請依下文回答第 41 題至第 45 題
How do you lose weight in the first place?—Mostly, through breathing. While the concept of “burning” fat is not altogether wrong, losing fat involves plenty of carbon dioxide leaving your body. As the Washington Post explains:Researchers found that to burn a pound of fat, a human needs to inhale about three pounds of oxygen and drink about a pound of water. Water can exit the body in plenty of ways—poop, pee, sweat, saliva and any number of bodily fluids—but your lungs handle the brunt of the weight loss.
Your fat “goes” into the atmosphere. (And no, it doesn’t contribute to global warming.) When it does go, you’re also releasing the extra storage of vitamins and toxins along with it. That might not sound like a good thing, but in the long run it’s far better to be rid of them. As Popular Science states, a kind of pesticides, among other pollutants, are known to get bound up in fat—they leak into our food supply: Bodies don’t seem to store enough of these to become toxic, but the constant build-up leaves you vulnerable to exposure. And they do start to re-emerge when you lose weight.
By losing weight at a healthy pace (1-2 pounds a week), the limited number of pollutants released will not overload your bloodstream. Your urine will make quick work of them. Extreme dieting is a different story. The more weight you lose, the more of these toxins enter your bloodstream.
Since we no longer face the same problem as our ancestors—most of us don’t have to worry about whether or not we’ll eat tonight, or tomorrow—fat storage plays a different role in our bodies than previously. Many avoidable health problems are due to this excessive storage of energy, hormones and toxins. Some researchers claim 70 percent of our medical problems can be addressed through a healthier lifestyle, which includes eating better and moving more.

【題組】 42 Why did the author mention such things as “poop, pee, sweat, saliva, and any number of bodily fluids”?
(A) To illustrate how water goes out of human body.
(B) To explain how water is consumed by human body.
(C) To demonstrate what water does to help humans exercise.
(D) To indicate what bodily organs are related to the intake of water.
